FMS 2010 (Sunday, January 10, 2010)
The next exam to follow is Faculty of Management Studies entrance exam. FMS 2010 is scheduled on Sunday, January 10, 2010. It is a two hour exam and will be held in 20 cities across India.

NMAT 2010 (Saturday, January 30 to Monday, February 8, 2010)
The next exam in the row is Narsee Monjee Aptitutde Test (NMAT), which is the entrance exam for Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) which will be an online test. It will be held in a 10 day window, starting from Saturday, January 30 to Monday, February 8, 2010. The duration of the exam is 150 minutes. The exam will be held in 19 centers across India apart from international test centers.

MAT (Sunday, February 7, 2010)
Management Aptitude Test (MAT), the entrance exam organized by AIMA, which is held four times a year, is scheduled for Sunday, February 7, 2010. As the test will be held in both paper pencil and computer based test, the computer based test will be held from Saturday, February 13 onwards.

ATMA (Sunday, February 14, 2010)
The next exam to look forward to is AIMS Test for Management Admissions (ATMA) which is scheduled on Sunday, February 14, 2010. This is a three hour exam with 170 questions. The last date for the sale of the application kit is Saturday, January 23, 2010 and the last date for online registration is Monday, January 25, 2010.

Maharashtra MBA CET 2010
The Director of Technical Education(DTE) have announced the dates of MBA CET 2010 . The Maharashtra MBA CET 2010 will be held on February 21, 2010 (Sunday)

MBA Entrance Exam in India is also no cake walk. You need in-depth knowledge, analytical mind, sharp memory and above all, systematic planning and preparation. Needless to say that the candidates cannot and should not attempt preparation for his MBA Entrance Test overnight. Since the competition is amongst the best available talent from all disciplines, meticulous and long term preparation are required to get admitted to the MBA program. Although the syllabi in the admission/entrance test differ from university to university, there are certain common aspects that appear in most of the entrance test, CAT, XAT, MAT, XLRI, SNAP and MBA Entrance Exams conducted by State Universities in one form or the other. These aspects include tests on quantitative aptitude, reasoning, intelligence, comprehension, case analysis, relationships, word power, synonyms, antonyms, general knowledge/awareness, etc. It is therefore, essential that the candidates start preparing well in advance on all the above aspects. If one can get hold of previous year’s papers or at least the pattern, this would go a long way in guiding the candidates to prepare properly for the test.

Here are some tips to prepare on important aspects which are common to most of the MBA entrance examinations in India:

(1) Quantitative Aptitude: A candidate seeking admission to MBA programme is expected to have aptitude for basic and elementary accounting as well as the knack of solving the simple arithmetic problems. This is one of the areas in the admission test which, if properly prepared and practiced, is likely to put the candidate ahead of others, as one can hope to score even 100% marks in this part.

(b) Logical Reasoning: Questions on logical reasoning may be of several types and in several forms. These could include a statement on which the candidates are asked to draw correct interference out of the given choices. There could be questions on series of words and figures, arrangement of alphabets, brain teasers or even such questions as only call for drawing logical inferences. Just like quantitative aptitude test, this portion of admission test also needs special and detailed preparations and practice.

(c) Comprehension Test: Comprehension test is aimed at gauging the understanding of English language by the candidates. Usually, a paragraph is given which the candidates are required to go through carefully and then answer the question by choosing the correct answer. To attempt this part speedily and correctly, the candidates must practice reading with a quick speed and understanding the entire passage.

(d) General Awareness: As the name suggests, the test of general awareness aims to judge the general knowledge of the candidates. Basic facts about all aspects of general knowledge like Science, Geography, History, Economics, Polity, etc are essentially required to be known.

During the weeks prior to your scheduled exam date, it’s a good idea to complete one or more practice tests specific to the exam you are going to take. Score your practice test questions, and look closely at the items you missed. By making sure you understand the reasons the answers you selected were incorrect, you’ll be in a better position to interpret the questions correctly the next time.

While you are preparing for the exam, learn what you can about the manner in which the test will be scored. It is very important to find out if wrong answers count against your score. If they do, you should avoid guessing if you aren’t fairly certain which answer is correct. If there is no penalty for wrong answers, however, make sure that you don’t leave any questions blank. If a wrong answer can’t hurt your score, it only makes sense to attempt to answer every question. Doing so might actually have a positive impact on the outcome of the exam.

According to several successful candidates one should start preparing for the CAT exams at least a year in advance. A common dilemma among students is whether to take CAT along with final year or after finishing graduation. All coaching classes and faculty are unanimous in their opinion that CAT should be taken along with the final year.

Analyse weak areas

Begin by identifying weak areas and evolve a strategy to overcome them. For example:

• To improve maths skills, start with high school books to brush-up arithmetic, algebra and geometry.

• To improve verbal ability read extensively – editorials, articles, etc. Create your own lexicon by noting down unfamiliar words.

Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is a National Entrance Test conducted by Centre for Management Services (CMS), the specialized division of AIMA. MAT exam is used as a benchmark by hundreds of AICTE approved Institutions & University departments to screen candidates for admissions to MBA programmes.

The Management Aptitude Test or MAT is the test conducted by All India Management Testing Service for entering into MBA or equivalent post graduate programmes. There are five papers in MAT:

Master of Business Administration is normally considered to be the basic and ideal post- graduate qualification for taking up a good and rewarding career in management.

A candidate with a good MBA degree finds no problem in getting a good job and freshers are usually inducted as Management Trainees for one to two years, before getting absorbed in regular scales. After a few years of experience, MBAs may choose the job of their own liking on very attractive terms.

The most prestigious degrees: Awarded by Institutes of Management (IIMs) located at Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Bangalore, Kozhikode, Indore and Lucknow.

Some universities of repute conduct MBA program, v.i.z. Delhi University, Bombay University, Madras University, Calcutta University, Punjab University, Aligarh Muslim University, Banaras Hindu University, Allahabad University, Baroda University, Mysore University, Cochin University, Patna University, Ranchi University, Magadh University, Jodhpur University, Jammu University, Bhopal University etc.

There are several other universities and institutes like Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Rural Management and Institute of Management which also conduct MBA programs.

Entrance Examinations

Entrance test by Universities: The selection of candidates for MBA program is made through entrance test by the universities, depending upon the number of seats and quantum of competition.

Exam profile: The entrance test is for two to three hour duration. Some of the universities have more than one paper. The paper usually is objective type (multiple choices) in nature and covers areas like reasoning, reading comprehension, quantitative aptitude, data interpretation, general awareness, business communication skills etc. The exact layout of the question paper varies in different universities.

Part- time/Correspondence Course:

Some universities like Punjabi University, Patiala and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) offer such courses. IGNOU is one of the premier institutions which offers MBA program through a nation- wide network of its 170 study centers. Internationally recognized as a centre of excellence for studies, IGNOU offers a 5- semester MBA program and also provides the facility of counseling. This course is particularly useful for the officers of Armed Forces who retire at relatively younger age, and also to those Government servants who wish to seek careers in managerial cadres by seeking premature retirement.

Entrance exam: The candidates seeking admission in this program offered by IGNOU must have completed 25 years of age and must have at least three years’ experience in the supervisory capacity. There is, however, no upper age limit. The admission is made entirely on the basis of marks obtained in the entrance test which is for two- hour duration and has about 100 objective type questions on comprehension, reasoning, English language, general awareness, data interpretation, quantitative aptitude etc.

Common Admission Test (CAT)

The CAT consists of questions that evaluate a candidate’s quantitative, verbal, logical and data interpretive abilities. The test booklet contains several sections. Each section contains several items/questions. Directions are given for each group of questions in each section of the test. Read them carefully, skipping the directions may lead to mission the main idea and losing credit for some questions in that section. Applicants are free to work on the sections in any order and to demonstrate competence in all the sections of the test. Wrong answers carry negative marks.

CAT is scheduled for November 18, 2007 . Duration of the test is two and a half hours. Copy of CAT 2005 with the answer key is available for download on the website to get a basic idea of the type and variety of questions, level of difficulty and different kinds of directions one may expect.

IIFT Admission Test

The admission test is a multiple choice objective type written test (in English). Duration of the test is two hours. It will cover English Comprehension, General Knowledge & Awareness, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Analysis. There will be negative marking for wrong answers.

FMS Admission Test

The Delhi University FMS admission test has questions to assess Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability and Language Comprehension, Analytical Ability and awareness and comprehension of the micro and macro – environment of the business and economy.

XAT

XAT usually has three sections assessing Verbal Ability, Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation & Logical Ability to be completed in two hours. This is followed by and essay of 20 minutes duration.

AIMA MAT

The All India Management Association (AIIMA), is the apex body or development of management in India . Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is a National Entrance Test for admission to MBA and equivalent programmes which is usually conducted 4 times in a year in February, May, September and December every year.

MAT is an objective type test with multiple – choice answers with 200 questions to be completed in 150 minutes or two and a half hours.

The test usually divided into five section, each with 40 questions, designed to measure a person’s (i) English Language comprehension in 30 minutes

(ii) Mathematical Skills in 40 minutes

(iii) Data analysis and Sufficiency skills in 35 minutes

(iv) Intelligence and Critical Reasoning skills in 30 minutes and

(v) Awareness of the Indian and global environment in 15 minutes. The time allowance varies for each section.

IGNOU OPENMAT – is conducted by IGNOU twice an year for admissions to MBA Programs through Distance Learning.

State level management entrance tests more or less follow the same pattern of questions although the level of difficulty may vary, and some might have both verbal and non – verbal reasoning questions. In some cases, there may not be negative marking for wrong answers.
