Notification  for Faculty of Management Studies (FMS), Delhi University MBA admissions is out, marking December 5, 2010 as the date for the FMS Entrance Test.

For the MBA fulltime (MBA-FT), you need to have at least a 3-year Bachelor’s Degree programme after twelve years of formal schooling. The minimum percentage required in the Bachelor’s degree differs according to disciplines like so:
– Arts, Commerce or Social Sciences: 50%
– Sciences: 55%
– Mathematics or Statistics: 60%
– Medicine, Engineering or Technology: 60% or CGPA of at least 6 on a scale of 10
– Post Graduate Degree or a second Bachelor’s Degree after 10+2+3: 60%

Candidates from reserved categories will have a 5% marks relaxation in each discipline.

Those who are going to finish their Bachelor’s degrees in 2011 too can apply, provided they can produce their marksheets satisfying the eligibility criteria by October 1, 2011.

The FMS will be following an online application process as mentioned on their website.The registration process is not an entirely online one as in the case of the CAT, as you will have to send an Acknowledgment Form along with your photo and caste documents by snailmail. You need to register and send the acknowledgment form before the last date October 15, 2010.

Until now, FMS used to offer two different MBA programmes — the MBA FT (Fulltime) and an MBA in Management of Services (MS). Starting 2011, the two programmes would be merged and offered as MBA (Fulltime).

The FMS test is a two-hour paper-pencil test comprising four sections:

1. Quantitative Ability
2. Logical Reasoning and Analytical Ability
3. Verbal Ability
4. English Comprehension

The government has decided to set up 7 more IIMs — currently existing are 7 IIMs in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Lucknow, Indore, Kozhikode and Shillong but due to reforms and changes in the industrial policies, there is a greater requirement for MBA’s.

They are in Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, Ranchi in Jharkhand, Raipur in Chhatisgarh, Rohtak in Haryana, Uttarkhand has not decided on the location and neither has Jammu and Kashmir, and the same goes for Rajasthan.

4 IIMs — Chatisgarh, haryana, Jharkhand and Tamil nadu will begin in 2009 and the rest will brgin in 2010. The total cost is Rs 451 crore. Initially there would be 140 students a year but finally 560 students will be admitted — it is a 2 year course, hence, the total students would be over 1000.

Postgraduate Programme (PGP) in Management would be the flagship programs at these new IIMs. Since the government notification categorically states that four IIMs will start their session in 2010 itself, does it mean that CAT 2009 will actually feature 11 IIMs! As the date for the CAT entrance exam notification nears this is one thing all MBA aspirants will watch out for.

Admission to the management Institutes is based on the Common Admission Test (CAT) jointly conducted by the six Indian Institutes of Management. This test is conducted on a yearly basis for admission to the Postgraduate Programmes (PGP) and the Fellow Programmes in Management (FPM) of the IIMs situated at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore, Kozhikode and Lucknow. The examination, generally held in the month of December, is conducted at the following centres: Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jamshedpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Pune, Tiruchirapalli and Vijayawada.

Eligibility Conditions
For the Indian Institutes of Management

Applicants should have at least a three-year Bachelor’s degree in any discipline obtained through the 10+2+3 system or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) as eligible for postgraduate studies.

Candidates appearing for the final Bachelor’s degree examination can also apply. Such candidates, if selected, will be allowed to provisionally join the programme only if they submit a certificate latest by June of the year of admission from the Principal / Registrar of their College / Institute stating that they have appeared for the examinations (including practicals) in all the subjects required for obtaining the Bachelor’s degree.

For institutes other than the Indian Institutes of Management

The candidate must have:

(i) At least a three-year Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any discipline recognised by the AIU / AICTE as eligible for postgraduate studies.

(ii) Secured 50% aggregate in the qualifying Degree and a minimum of 50% aggregate in Standards X or XII.

- SC/ST candidates, however, are eligible if they have a minimum of 45% in the qualifying Degree and a minimum of 45% in Standards X or XII.

- For some correspondence courses, the prescribed minimum may be lower.

Notification for various MBA Entrance Examinations are published in the media starting in August / September.

Scheme of the Examination

(i) A Written Test is conducted to fathom the candidate’s general intelligence and basic aptitude in the following areas:

* English – Reading Comprehension, Verbal Ability and Vocabulary.
*Problem Solving / Quantitative Ability – Problems involving Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, etc.
*Data Interpretation – Data Sufficiency (Mathematics and Logical), Logical Reasoning and Analytical Reasoning.
*General Knowledge and Business Awareness – This is included in some examinations. However, no regular scheme can be discerned in these tests.

(ii) Group Discussion and Interview follow for those who succeed in the Written Test.

Entrance Examinations

Entrance test by Universities: The selection of candidates for MBA program is made through entrance test by the universities, depending upon the number of seats and quantum of competition.

Exam profile: The entrance test is for two to three hour duration. Some of the universities have more than one paper. The paper usually is objective type (multiple choices) in nature and covers areas like reasoning, reading comprehension, quantitative aptitude, data interpretation, general awareness, business communication skills etc. The exact layout of the question paper varies in different universities.

Part- time/Correspondence Course:

Some universities like Punjabi University, Patiala and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) offer such courses. IGNOU is one of the premier institutions which offers MBA program through a nation- wide network of its 170 study centers. Internationally recognized as a centre of excellence for studies, IGNOU offers a 5- semester MBA program and also provides the facility of counseling. This course is particularly useful for the officers of Armed Forces who retire at relatively younger age, and also to those Government servants who wish to seek careers in managerial cadres by seeking premature retirement.

Entrance exam: The candidates seeking admission in this program offered by IGNOU must have completed 25 years of age and must have at least three years’ experience in the supervisory capacity. There is, however, no upper age limit. The admission is made entirely on the basis of marks obtained in the entrance test which is for two- hour duration and has about 100 objective type questions on comprehension, reasoning, English language, general awareness, data interpretation, quantitative aptitude etc.
